The problem

Where the job started

The backyard deck and its stairs had weathered grey. The boards were worn, the wood railing was tired, and shrubs had grown up through the balusters.

What Korvex did

Take the old deck, railing and stairs apart
Haul the old lumber away
Strip the deck to its frame and tape the tops of the joists
Lay cedar deck boards
Set posts on black metal bases and install black aluminum balusters
Build new stairs and a lattice skirt
Stain the finished surface

How we solved it

The hard parts of this job

With the boards off, the whole frame was open to inspect. Joist tape went on the tops of the joists before the cedar, so water does not sit on the wood under the boards.

Railing cut out of the shrubs
Shrubs had grown up through the old railing. The balusters were cut out piece by piece with a saw, and the shrubs beside the deck are still there in the finished photos.

Railing parts finished before they went up
The cedar rails were sanded on the deck with the baluster connectors already fixed to them. The posts stand on black metal post bases.
