The problem
Where the job started
Behind a townhouse, the old slab patio and the strip of lawn beside it were to become one patio on one new base, along a wall with a gas meter, an air conditioner and the step at the patio door.

How we solved it
The hard parts of this job
Slabs rock when the base under them is uneven or soft. A compacted base and a bedding layer screeded flat give every slab full support.
01One base under the patio and the lawn strip
A strip of lawn ran beside the old slabs. It was dug out with the patio area, one run of fabric went across both, and the edges were tamped by hand.
02Gas meter, air conditioner and a step
The patio runs along a wall with a gas meter, an air conditioner and a concrete step at the patio door. The bedding was screeded up to the step, and the stone strip along the foundation stays between the slabs and the wall.
