The problem
Where the job started
The wood fence behind a townhouse was leaning and falling apart, with shrubs and vines grown through it. The whole line had to come out.

- Tear out the old fence and clear the overgrowth
- Lay out the line with a string
- Set new posts along the line
- Build and hang board-on-board panels
- Build a gate around an existing tree branch
- Clean up the yard
How we solved it
The hard parts of this job
A fence is as straight as its posts. A string went up along the cleared line, and every post was set to it before the first board went on.
01Clearing the old line first
The old fence had fallen into shrubs and vines along most of its length. The fence and the overgrowth came out together, and the line was cleared to bare soil before the string went up.
02A tree on the back line
A mature tree stands right at the back line, and one of its branches crosses where the fence runs. The posts were set to the string on both sides of the trunk, and the boards were framed around the branch, which stayed in place.
